National Council of Churches and NGOs call for Security Council action on Darfur

The Save Darfur Coalition and its counterparts in France and Great Britain are urging their countries to immediately sponsor a United Nations Security Council resolution that will mandate peace enforcement operations in Darfur, Sudan.

Sudan a focus of church and state

As the chief U.S. diplomat arrives in Sudan today to press government leaders to resolve the Darfur crisis, a Christian group at home is working to raise awareness of the suffering of the people there. The visit coincides with an effort by Church World Service on Wednesday to promote nationwide grassroots awareness and fundraising to provide aid to victims. American Jewish World Service is also working with CWS to advance the cause. The focus of the "Dear Sudan" campaign is to alert Americans to the suffering of the people stricken by violence in Sudan's western region of Darfur as well as other parts of the nation.

Groups rally to end Darfur genocide

On July 21, the eve of the anniversary of Congress officially deeming the situation in Darfur a "genocide," several groups joined together on the lawn in front of the Federal Building on Wilshire Boulevard to rally in opposition to the Sudanese government, calling for steps to end the genocide of people in the Darfur region of Sudan. The Darfur Freedom Summer Vigil was one of several taking place across the globe.
