SUDAN: US official urges Darfur rebel leaders to unite
Irin News – 11/09/2005
It has been a volatile week in Sudan, as rebel movements continued to fracture and the U.S. tried to keep them focused on moving the peace process forward. On November 3, the Sudanese Liberation Movement (SLM) elected Mani Arkko Minawi its new President. Mr. Minawi's election sparked immediate protest from former SLM President Abdul Wahid Mohammed Nur. The conflict between the factions now threatens to open up along tribal lines, Minawi's faction representing the Zaghawa tribe and Nur's representing the Fur tribe.

The tense exchange was not to be the last for Zoellick, who on Thursday, Nov. 10 had to ask a Sudanese government official to leave the room during an AU briefing on the security situation in Darfur. After the official objected, Zoellick shouted back, "I want to hear a straight story ... and I can't trust your government." Not all of the Deputy Secretary's trip was marked with strife however. On Nov. 9 he delivered a speech at Khartoum University calling on both sides of the conflict to move towards peace.
